Intumescent paint contractors for structural steel

We apply intumescent paint to structural steelwork in warehouses, industrial units, schools and commercial buildings. It protects the steel in a fire, giving the frame more time before it loses strength.

We're a Constructionline Gold member and CHAS accredited, and every job is covered by our six month workmanship guarantee.

    What we coat

    Steel beams and columns

Portal frames in warehouses and industrial units

Exposed steel in offices, schools and shops

Mezzanine floors and other steel structures

    How we apply it

We apply intumescent coatings by airless spray, brush or roller, to the manufacturer's specification and the fire rating set out for the job.

The steel is cleaned and primed with a compatible primer before the intumescent coat goes on. A top coat goes on where the specification needs one, including in the colour you need.

    Inspected and signed off

Once the coating is done, an independent inspector checks it and signs it off, so you have the paperwork for building control and your fire strategy.

    One contractor on site

We can apply the intumescent coating alongside the rest of the painting on site, so you have one painting contractor rather than two.

    How we work

Painters are usually the last trade on site, so the programme is often tight by the time we arrive. We plan for that, and we finish.

    Safety first

Safety is our priority. We complete RAMS and COSHH assessments on site, in line with health and safety law, and we're CHAS accredited.

A clear record of every job

Every job runs through our own digital system, so you get a clear record of the work, not just our word for it. We pinpoint all of our work on the building's plans, our team take photos on site as the work goes on, and we know who last worked in each area. Our clients get a daily update from it too. It saves everyone hours of admin, and it's there for health and safety as well.

    Questions we get asked

    What is intumescent paint?

It's a fire protection coating. It stays thin in normal use, and in a fire it swells into a thick char that insulates the steel.

    How does intumescent paint work?

As the temperature rises in a fire, the coating expands many times over and forms an insulating layer. That slows down how fast the steel heats up, so the frame keeps its strength for longer.

How thick does intumescent paint need to be?

It depends on the size of each steel section and the fire rating needed. The manufacturer's specification sets the thickness for each section, and we apply it to that.

What fire rating can intumescent paint give?

Ratings of 30, 60, 90 and 120 minutes are common. We apply the system to whatever rating the specification asks for.

    Who certifies the work?

Once the coating is done, an independent inspector checks it and signs it off.

Can intumescent paint be a colour?

Yes. A top coat can go over the intumescent coating in the colour you need, where the system allows. We can colour match, including to RAL and BS colours.

Can you work while our building is in use?

Yes. We plan the work around how your building is used.

    Which accreditations do you hold?

We're a Constructionline Gold member (registration 1439221), CHAS accredited at Standard level (membership 168619), an accredited Living Wage Employer and registered with CITB (registration 5198182).

    Where do you work?

From our base in Warrington across the North of England and the Midlands, and on larger projects anywhere in the UK.

    Are you insured?

We hold £10 million public liability and £10 million employers' liability insurance.

    Is the work guaranteed?

Yes. Every job is covered by our six month workmanship guarantee.
